About Chess Club

The Chess Club is excited for another great year of Hunter chess! We currently expect chess club meetings will resume in late September 2025. As in previous years, we plan to meet most Wednesday afternoons in the Hunter cafeteria after school until 4:45pm. The chess club is a great way to have fun, learn, and play lots of chess! Playing chess can improve academic skills such as analysis, creativity, and reasoning and can enhance life skills such as perseverance, resilience, and assertiveness. Our chess club is sponsored by the Hunter PTA, led by a team of enthusiastic parent volunteers, and is open to all Hunter students!

The main activity at chess club is free play with other students of roughly matched ability levels. The chess club also provides instruction for new kindergarten and first grade players, and occasional tutorials for our more experienced students. Most kindergarteners are asked to consider joining the chess club after winter break, at which time we will start a new round of "learn to play" lessons. Those kindergarteners with older siblings already in chess club, as well as first graders new to the game, are welcome to join for lessons starting as soon as we resume in the fall! Additionally, please consider Hunter's beginning chess elective course, which is a fantastic opportunity to learn chess during the school day!

Parents of chess club members are asked to commit to volunteering at least twice per school year per child. Parent volunteers are needed to help run the Wednesday afternoon club meetings - no knowledge of chess is required! Volunteers must be approved by WCPSS before supporting club meetings in person.
